As an accounting professional, you know that the numbers tell a story. You can look at a balance sheet or a profit and loss statement and immediately see where a business is thriving and where it is bleeding cash. But here is the hard truth: most business owners cannot.

In a recent episode of Building the Premier Accounting Firm, host Roger Knecht sat down with Chris Shurian, a business coach and serial entrepreneur who has founded over eight companies. Chris shared his journey of brilliant successes and devastating failures, revealing exactly how a lack of financial clarity can sink a profitable company—and how accounting professionals can change the way they communicate data to save their clients’ businesses.

If you want to step into the CFO advisory role and truly add value to your clients, you have to stop acting like a human calculator and start acting like a navigator. Here is a breakdown of what business owners actually need from their accounting professionals.

The Danger of Financial Blind Spots

Early in his career, Chris opened a restaurant. It is an industry notorious for razor-thin margins, where minor fluctuations in food and labor costs can quickly put you underwater. Knowing this, Chris hired an accounting professional to manage the books.

Unfortunately, he went over a year and a half without receiving a reliable P&L statement that he had confidence in. Without accurate, timely data, he was flying blind. By the time he finally got an accurate picture of his financials, it was too late—the restaurant was bleeding cash, and he was forced to shut it down.

The Takeaway for Accountants: The information you provide is not just for tax compliance; it is the lifeblood of your client’s business. When accountants fail to deliver accurate, timely financials, they actively hinder the owner’s ability to make informed business decisions.

How Job Costing Saves Businesses

While bad accounting destroyed Chris’s restaurant, brilliant accounting saved his construction business.

At one point, Chris had five different remodeling projects running simultaneously. Cash flow was incredibly tight, and he was struggling to pay invoices. He felt like a failure until his accountant taught him the power of job costing. By allocating every single expense to its specific project, Chris was able to look at his financials granularly.

The numbers revealed a massive insight: four of his jobs were highly profitable, but one job had been severely underbid and was draining the cash from the entire company.

Job costing did not just save his business financially; it saved him emotionally. It gave him the peace of mind to realize that he wasn’t a bad business owner—he just had one bad project that needed to be addressed. As an advisor, illuminating these specific profit leaks is how you become invaluable to your clients.

Stop Sending 15-Page Spreadsheets: The KPI Scorecard

As Chris’s empire grew to four active companies, he hired a fractional CFO to help him forecast and manage overhead.

The CFO spent weeks building a masterfully detailed, 11×17 Excel spreadsheet outlining every possible financial scenario. He proudly presented it to Chris, expecting applause. Instead, it made “smoke come out of his ears.” It was too confusing, too detailed, and entirely overwhelming.

Chris gave the CFO a golden piece of advice that every accounting professional needs to hear: “Show me a scorecard. Tell me if I am winning or losing.”

Business owners do not want to wade through three pages of spreadsheets. They want a “Red Light, Green Light” KPI Dashboard. They need you to highlight the 3 to 5 core metrics that drive their specific industry (like prime costs in a restaurant, or labor costs in construction).

  • Green: We are on track. Keep going.

  • Yellow: We are nearing the boundary. Pay attention.

  • Red: We are losing money. We need to dig deeper.

If the light is red, then you can pull out the 15-page spreadsheet to find the root cause. But your executive summary must be a simple, actionable scorecard.

The “Barefoot Experience” & Customer Service

Beyond the numbers, a true business advisor looks at the holistic operations of a company, including customer experience. Chris believes that “customer service is a contact sport.”

In his construction business, Chris instituted the “Barefoot Experience.” Every single day, before his crew left a client’s home, they were required to sweep, vacuum, and pack away all tools so thoroughly that the homeowner could walk through the active construction zone barefoot without stepping on a nail.

How does your accounting firm treat its clients? Are you sending automated AI replies when high-ticket clients call with a panic attack about payroll? Are you taking the time to send handwritten thank-you notes? To stand out in a commoditized industry, you must raise the bar on your client experience until your service becomes a “category of one.”

Conclusion: Be the Navigator

Your clients are experts in their specific crafts—whether that is building homes, cooking food, or writing code. They are not experts in reading financial statements. By simplifying complex data into actionable KPI scorecards, you can guide them away from financial disaster and toward massive profitability.
