The 2030 Accounting Warning: Why Traditional CPA Firms Are Disappearing | Jody Padar
Roger Knecht
President of Universal Accounting Center
Episode Details
For years, accounting firm owners have debated which Artificial Intelligence tools to add to their tech stack. According to industry pioneer Jody Padar, that is the wrong question entirely. Because AI and automation are rapidly taking over compliance work, the real question every firm owner must answer before the year 2030 is simple: When AI does 100% of the accounting and tax preparation work, what makes you relevant to your clients?
In this episode of Building the Premier Accounting Firm, host Roger Knecht sits down with Jody Padar to unpack why the accounting profession has never had a technology problem, it has a value problem. From venture-backed FinTech startups and Private Equity roll-ups dismantling the traditional partnership model to the rise of the “Accounting Agent Manager,” this guide breaks down what your firm must do over the next five years to thrive in the accounting renaissance.
Widely known across the financial world as The Radical CPA, Jody Padar is a bestselling author, speaker, change visionary, and Co-Founder of Exel Labs, where she helped create the AI-powered communication coach Na’vi.
Jody has spent her entire career pushing the accounting profession outside of its comfort zone. Back in 2008, when traditional practitioners told her that “CPAs aren’t allowed to tweet,” she became one of the industry’s earliest social media adopters—building an audience of over 600,000 followers and leading the charge toward cloud accounting and value pricing.
What makes Jody’s perspective on Artificial Intelligence uniquely authoritative is that she has lived on both sides of the desk:
14 Years as a Firm Owner: She built, scaled, and ran her own progressive CPA practice for nearly a decade and a half, experiencing firsthand the operational pressures of managing staff, serving small business owners, and navigating tax seasons.
5 Years on the “Build Side” of Accounting AI: After selling her practice, Jody spent five years working directly alongside software engineers and machine-learning scientists. She led AI and machine-learning bookkeeping initiatives at Botkeeper before becoming Employee #1 at april, a tax technology startup. At april, Jody and her engineering team used Large Language Models (LLMs) to read IRS form instructions and automatically code tax forms from scratch—achieving tax software approval across all 50 states in just three years, a feat that had not been accomplished in over 30 years.
Today, through Exel Labs, Jody combines her deep technical understanding of AI architecture with her passion for human relationships to help accountants build the communication, leadership, and advisory skills required for 2030 and beyond.
1. Stop Hiding Behind the 1040: Separating Conversations From Compliance
For decades, accountants have bundled their best advisory insights inside a compliance deliverable. A client comes in for a 1040 tax return or a monthly financial statement, and during the meeting, the accountant asks about their family, their business goals, and what is changing in their financial life.
“The reason they saw value is because they came to a trusted professional and they had a conversation about their financial life,” Jody explains. “It wasn’t necessarily in the tax document. Yes, they needed that compliance document… But we as accountants have never separated it.”
Because many professionals entered accounting for the rules, logic, and predictability rather than sales and daily interpersonal communication, it became easy for introverted practitioners to “hide behind the deliverable.” Today, that safety net is vanishing:
Bank reconciliations are already gone.
Routine tax preparation is going away.
Technical knowledge is no longer gold. In the past, memorizing the tax code was your competitive moat. Today, technical knowledge is equalized—any business owner can log onto an AI model and get a technical tax answer faster than calling their accountant.
When AI makes compliance automatic, accountants can no longer justify their fees through form preparation. You must unbundle your expertise, step out from behind the financial statement, and explicitly sell the value of the strategic conversation.
2. The Software Engineer Wake-Up Call: Why Accountants Are Two Years Behind
Many accountants still dismiss AI because early chatbots hallucinated or struggled with math. Jody warns that this complacency is a massive blind spot—and points to her time working with software engineers as proof of how fast the ground shifts.
Just two years ago, software engineers insisted AI could never write production-level code. Today, those same engineers are no longer writing code—AI writes 100% of the code. Human engineers have transitioned into software architects who design how the pieces fit together and audit the final output.
Accountants are sitting in the exact seat software engineers occupied two years ago. As Roger Knecht emphasizes, society still requires human accountability: AI cannot legally sign off on audited financial statements for a business loan, nor can it sign and file a tax return. However, the role of the practitioner is rapidly shifting from preparer to Accounting Agent Manager—the essential “human in the loop” who manages AI agents (like Jody’s internal development agent, “BBF”), verifies compliance, and translates the financial story for the client with human context and judgment.
3. Your Real Competition Isn’t the CPA Across the Street—It’s FinTech and Private Equity
When accounting firm owners attend conferences, they typically benchmark themselves against the bookkeeper or tax preparer sitting next to them. If they are doing slightly better than the firm down the street, they assume they are safe.
Jody warns that by 2030—a five-year window stretching between 2028 and 2032—the traditional accounting landscape will look unrecognizable due to two disruptive forces:
VC-Backed FinTech Startups: Your true competition is not the CPA down the block; it is a venture-funded FinTech startup that just raised $6 million to rebuild accounting from scratch with new technology. When a client logs into financial software and gets an immediate AI response—versus calling their accountant and waiting two days for a callback—traditional firms lose on speed and convenience.
Private Equity & The Death of the Multi-Partner Firm: Private Equity capital is flowing downstream into the mid-market, acquiring and consolidating smaller practices. Meanwhile, traditional multi-partner CPA firms are struggling to adapt because five partners in a room can rarely agree on a unified direction—leading to years of failing to reinvest in technology.
The 2030 Market Split: Jody predicts the traditional partnership “firm” will morph into corporate “accounting companies,” with several going public. The profession will bifurcate into roughly 30 massive national conglomerates at the top, a hollowed-out middle market, and a vibrant ecosystem of nimble small firms and solopreneurs (5 to 10 people) who win by delivering localized, high-touch human relationships.
4. The “4-Client” Trusted Advisor Myth & Building Empathy at Scale
Ask any accounting firm partner about their book of business, and they will proudly declare themselves their clients’ “most trusted business advisor”—noting how they are “ride or die” and attend their clients’ weddings and funerals.
“Well, that’s with four of their clients,” Jody points out. “What happened to the other 100 or 300 clients?”
In most practices, deep advisory relationships are controlled by the partner and reserved for a tiny handful of top clients, while the rest of the roster is left behind with transactional compliance. Because human accountants cannot compete with FinTech on 24/7 automated speed, you must win on the relationship by creating empathy at scale:
Deliver a Consistent “Warm and Fuzzy” Experience: Whether a client walks in and speaks to a founding partner or a staff accountant with one year of experience, they should receive the exact same level of care, curiosity, and strategic engagement.
Move to Monthly & Quarterly Cadences: Replace once-a-year tax handoffs with monthly check-ins and quarterly strategy sessions.
Celebrate Clients Offline: Roger shares examples of proactive firm owners hosting in-office “Client Appreciation Open Houses” so clients can mingle with the entire staff, or renting out a local pumpkin patch for an afternoon where clients bring their families—sending a clear message that the firm values the personal relationship far beyond the numbers.
5. Training the Next Generation When Entry-Level Work Disappears
A critical question facing firm owners is how to train incoming talent: if AI eliminates entry-level bank reconciliations and basic data entry, how do junior accountants gain the experience needed to become mid- and senior-level advisors five years from now?
Jody compares this shift to “new math” in schools—just because senior partners learned tax by repetitively keying 400 tax returns into software doesn’t mean manual data entry is the only way to build expertise. Keying numbers into software only teaches someone how to operate a form; sitting in on strategic conversations is what teaches a young professional why a partner makes specific financial decisions.
Additionally, because remote work and texting culture mean next-generation staff are no longer learning communication skills by “sitting outside a partner’s door,” firms must modernize how they train soft skills. Jody breaks the industry into three groups:
20% of accountants get communication naturally through osmosis.
10% of accountants prefer purely technical back-office work and will never get it.
70% in the middle want to have better client conversations—they just need coaching, repetition, and structure.
To empower that middle 70%, Jody’s team built Na’vi, an AI conversation coach that reviews client conversations and provides immediate, real-time feedback cues—flagging when an accountant “spoke too technical,” prompting them to “dig deeper next time,” and identifying opportunities to offer additional advisory services.
6. Fight, Flight, or Freeze: Choosing Your Path for the Next 24 Months
With roughly 75% of senior practitioners retiring over the next decade and AI transforming workflows over the next 12 to 24 months, every accounting professional must confront three natural human responses to change:
Flight: Deciding you want no part of this evolution, selling your firm early, or retiring. (“If you’re in flight mode, I say get out faster—get out of the way,” Jody advises.)
Freeze: Feeling paralyzed by where to start or hiding behind the excuse of “I’m not an early adopter”—a path that guarantees your firm will be gobbled up in the transition.
Fight (The Accountrepreneur Mindset): Viewing this blank slate as a true Accounting Renaissance, embracing AI as the smartest creative partner in the room, and fighting for your clients by leading with human empathy, context, and better questions.
